While most of us are prepared for that extra day in February we get during a leap year, have you thought about how you plan to spend today’s leap second? We have an extra second today, which doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it can actually cause problems for the web.

The leap second decision is made by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Service, which comes up with how much adjusting is made each day to account for the Earth’s rotation. The last time we had an extra second was in 2012, notes The New York Times, and it actually sparked outages for Foursquare, Reddit and LinkedIn. An airline reservation system also crashed, leading to delays for Australia’s Qantas Airways.

Stock markets in the U.S. and around the world have already accounted for today’s leap second. Google even set up a “leap smear” system in 2011, which splits the second into even tinier time measurements and spreads them out during the day.

For most though, the Leap Second is cause for fun. Last Week Tonight host John Oliver even set up Spend Your Leap Second Here, which shows off second-long videos. You can see Charlie Rose laugh or hear Bobby Cannavale yell “LEAP SECOND” at you. There’s also LeapSecond2015.com, where people are also posting one-second long videos.

We hope you enjoyed the leap second you wasted reading this story.
