Netflix already invested millions to get Brad Pitt to make a movie for the streaming service, but they weren’t done with the Jolie Pitt family yet. Angelina Jolie has signed on to direct a movie for Netflix titled First They Killed My Father.
The film is an adaptation of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, written by human rights activist Loung Ung. Jolie wrote the script with Ung. Rithy Panh (The Missing Picture) will produce and the film will be available by late 2016.
Ung survived the deadly Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. She was only five when Rogue took power in 1975 and killed 2 million Cambodians. Ung was even trained as soldier and her six siblings worked in labor camps. She published her memoir in 2000 and became Jolie’s friend after the actress read her book.
“I was deeply affected by Loung‘s book," Jolie said. "It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son‘s homeland."
Netflix added that Jolie and Pitt’s Cambodian-born son, Maddox, will take part in the film production. They will also make the film available in both English and Khmer, the official language of Cambodia.
Jolie has been much more interested in directing lately than acting. Her directing efforts include 2011’s In The Land of Blood And Honey, last year’s Unbroken, the upcoming By The Sea with Pitt and Africa. First They Killed My Father will likely be made before Africa.
Pitt will star in David Michod’s War Machine for Netflix. The streaming service reportedly committed $60 million to that project.
