While John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein didn’t end up getting hired to direct Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, they could still end up working on it. The Vacation directors are reportedly in talks for the gig.
The two are currently in early talks to write the script, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Back in May, they were on a shortlist of potential directors, but the job went to Jon Watts, the director of Kevin Bacon’s Cop Car.
The new Spidey movie will be a co-production between Sony and Marvel since it will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland is playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige has said in the past that the new movie will focus on comedy, so it makes sense that they went with comedy writers for the script. Daley and Goldstein’s resume also includes Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the Horrible Bosses movies. They made their directing debut with Warner Bros.’ Vacation reboot, which hits theaters on July 29.
The new Spidey will make his debut in Captain America: Civil War next year. His solo film will be out on July 28, 2017.
