20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Joy, the latest film from director David O. Russell and his stock company of actors. Once again, the director has enlisted Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.
Joy is a surprising idea for a film and is based on a story by Russell and Bridesmaids writer Annie Mumolo. Lawrence stars as the title character, a housewife who tries to get out of her family’s shadow by starting her own business. She does look a bit young for the part, but her work in American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook proved that she can play older characters.
De Niro stars as her father, while Cooper has a supporting part as a TV producer. Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Edgar Ramirez, Elisabeth Rohm (another Hustle veteran), Virginia Madsen and Dascha Polanco make up the rest of the cast.
If Joy does turn out to be a brilliant film, it will continue the incredible streak Russell started with 2010’s The Fighter. Since making that film, all of his movies have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, although Hustle did wind up going 0 for 1o at the 2014 Oscars. And Russell himself has yet to win any Oscar for these films. Maybe Joy can finally bring a statue to his shelf.
Joy hits theaters on Dec. 25.
