Many know David Hasselhoff as just “The Hoff,” so it does sound conceivable that the former Baywatch star might actually change his name to “David Hoff” to get rid of the “hassle” in his life. Now, he claims to have done just that.

Hasselhoff wrote on Twitter Thursday, “Big news today and a massive relief for me. I hope everyone can understand.. it feels great.” He included an eight-second video, in which he held up a “Change of Name” certificate that showed he re-named himself “David Hoff.”

“I’ve been wanting to drop the hassle from my life for years,” the actor says. “Now, I have made it official. David Hoff.”

But did he really change his name? That the certificate in the video looked pretty fake.

His rep told Us Weekly that The Hoff did not really change his name. It was just a part of an ad campaign that will start in Australia this weekend. “David is just having some fun and more will be revealed in the next 24 hour,” the rep said.

Hasselhoff recently starred in Sharknado 3 and Ted 2.
