Following in the footsteps of a long line of musicians, including The Grateful Dead, Neil Young and Johnny Cash, J Burns is truly a musical genius. Drawing other comparisons among the artists he headlines with, Burns has adapted a reputation as a reputed artist and solo act.

Hailing from San Francisco, Burns has his hands on activism, musicianship, gardening and photography. His latest effort, Brunt Blue, is a crafted endeavor that is tight and filled with sonic showmanship. All the rock essentials are in this beautifully rendered Americana album. Burns' album has a full sound that is beyond mind-bending.

With four original songs, which coincide with important music today and speaks with the leading musical creators of now, Burns has harnessed a unique sound in Brunt Blue. The earthy man’s music was captured at TRI Studios by the legendary Bob Weir. And with contributions from legendary musicians, including Jay Lane of Primus; Jason Crosby, who has worked with Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana; and Robin Sylvester, who worked as an assistant on The Beatles' Abby Road, this is a masterful record that's worth listening to.

In "Freight Train," there is a rockabilly sound that is requisite throughout the rest of the album. It is a jaunty track that has appearances of pop as well. The melody is very catchy and withstanding. The harmonies on this track holds as something long-lasting. With 2:37 minutes of jaunty and an upbeat melody, the track is something to be reckoned with.

"Memory Lane" traces a similar trajectory as the previous track. As the second track on the album, it succeeds in accomplishing a polished sound. It is sunny and upbeat and catchy as well. With apprehension lying only in the lyrics, the lightness of the track does not detract from the serious turn that the track takes and overall direction for the rest of the album.

As a light album filled with light-hearted tracks that takes a turn for the sunny, uncompromising things of life, there are many things to appreciate on this album. From its great lyrics to the rockabilly tunes, many sweet songs unfold on this album. Brunt Blue is a must-listen and be sure you do. The album came out on June 25 and be sure you get yourself a copy.
