Thanks in part to a co-starring role in the Back to the Future series, the DeLorean car has never really left our hearts, even though a new one hasn’t been made in 35 years. Now, that’s about to change because the DeLorean Motor Company plans to start building new ones in Humble, Texas.
DMC CEO Stephen Wynne told Click2Houston that he plans on building replicas of the 1982 DeLorean, which will look just like the ones used in the movie, minus the Flux Capacitor, under a low-volume manufacturing law. He believes that the company’s Humble facility has enough material to make 300 cars already.
“It's huge for us. It means we're back as a car company again,” Wynne said.
You can buy a refurbished DeLorean for between $45,000 and $55,000. Wynne estimates that the new ones will go for just under $100,000, depending on the engine he uses. But you can rest easy because the outside will still look the same, right down to the famous wing doors.
“There's no reason to change the appearance of the car. As we go into the program, we'll decide what areas need to be freshened up,” Wynne said.
The return of the DeLoreans come just after Back to the Future turned 30. Last year was also the year that Marty and Doc went to in the future in Back to the Future Part II.
