After turning Misery into a stage play, Warner Bros. Theater Ventures has picked a new movie to bring to the stage. Sidney Lumet’s 1975 classic Dog Day Afternoon is being adapted by playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis.
Dog Day Afternoon starred Al Pacino and John Cazale as bank robbers who try to get money for a sex-change operation. Frank Pierson won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and the movie was nominated for five other Oscars, including Best Picture. It was based on a true story.
Guirguis won a Pulitzer Prize for Between Riverside and Crazy. As Deadline notes, his other credits include The Motherf**ker with the Hat and The Little Flower of East Orange.
The decision to turn Dog Day Afternoon into a stage play comes after the success of Misery an adaptation of the film based on Stephen King’s novel. The play marks the Broadway debut of Bruce Willis.
Warner Bros. Theater Ventures is a co-producer on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and is also producing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in London.
