Warning: we are about to reach peak ‘90s nostalgia. That’s because Paramount and Nickelodeon have decided to create one movie with many of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon characters from the ‘90s.
The news was first reported by Deadline, which says that the studio has hired Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) to direct NickToons. Hess will write with his wife and writing partner, Jerusha Hess. The producers are Mary Parent (The Revenant, Godzilla) of Disruption Entertainment and Cale Boyter.
Back in September, Tracking Board also reported that Parent was producing a Nick crossover movie. Hess was not involved at that point.
The idea for the project, which sounds like something any kid growing up in the ‘90s would have wished for, came from Ali Mendes, who works for Parent. The film could include Rugrats, The Angry Beavers, Rocko’s Modern Life, KaBlam!, Hey Arnold! and many more.
This news comes as Viacom’s Nickelodeon finally begins mining its past properties for new projects. A Hey Arnold! TV movie is reportedly in the works. Splat was also recently launched on Nickelodeon and features reruns of ‘90s shows.
Hess’ next film is the Jason Sudeikis/Kristen Wiig comedy Masterminds, which opens in September.
