Stephen Colbert paid tribute to Glenn Frey, one of the co-founders of the Eagles, with a really funny anecdote related to the song “Desperado.”

On last night’s The Late Show, Colbert recalled being at an eighth grade dance. He didn’t dance with any of the girls until the last song, which turned out to be “Desperado.”

“[It’s] the perfect last song at an eighth grade dance when you have danced with no one,” Colbert said. “Because I was the Desperado.”

When he heard one of his classmates say that it was her favorite song, he finally got the courage to ask her to dance with him. Colbert called that dance “one of the sweetest, most beautiful experiences of my life.”

“That day, I took a small - very small - step towards manhood,” he said. “And it would not have happened... I don’t think I would have reproduced by now if that song had not played that night.”

Frey deid on Monday after a series of illnesses. He was 67 years old.
