My Discount DVD Club is exactly what the name suggests. It’s a monthly club shipment of discount DVDs in a variety of genres. Along with the movies are a bag of microwave popcorn and a handful of candy. I decided to try their Horror box just in time for Halloween. Here’s what was inside:
Everything was sent in this white box with the company logo pasted to the outside. However, this will change next month when they begin mailing in a new bright red custom box. I love when things ship in special boxes, so that will be a lot of fun.
Inside the package, everything was packed tightly in this blue tissue paper. It’s eye-catching and it got everything here in one piece.
At the top of the box were my two DVDs. Movies from My Discount DVD Club are always brand new, never used and normally shrink-wrapped. This month I received The Asylum Studio version of War of the Worlds and MGM’s original Scanners.
This War of the Worlds claims to be “the most horrifying version of all!” It’s rated R, so it’s not family friendly. Though it came out the same year as the Tom Cruise version, this is not it. This is a grown-up version complete with violence, gore, sexual content and adult language. I haven’t watched it yet, but it looks interesting. It even has a variety of special features for those interested in how they made the film.
I think almost anyone who lived through the ‘80s has heard of Scanners. It was a popular film when it came out and was written and directed by the same man who made The Fly and Naked Lunch, David Cronenberg. This one is marked with Canadian ratings, but works just fine on an American DVD or Blu-ray player, being the same region.
I looked up both of these films on Amazon to see what they’re selling for. War of the Worlds sells for $12.89 on its own and this version of Scanners costs $22.88. That’s a total of almost $36 before adding in the cost of the popcorn and candy. Being that this subscription only costs $8.99 with free shipping, that’s an awesome deal!
Last in the box was a bag of popcorn and some candy. This month they sent Pop Secret butter popcorn, which is a favorite around here, plus M&M’s, Skittles and Starburst chews. Last month there was no chocolate, so the addition of the M&M’s was greatly appreciated. My fiancé immediately dove into those and the Skittles.
I love My Discount DVD Club. It gives us a cheap date night every month complete with snacks. It's so affordable that I signed up for multiple genres. Not to mention they listen to their customer’s concerns. People have been asking to pick their own films instead of being surprised each month, so the club is changing its format starting with their November shipment.
For every box you sign up for, you now get to choose from a list of films. You can pick all from one genre or mix subjects. They have Family, Children, Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Horror, Science Fiction, Thriller and Romance. Want to be surprised? They give you that option too. You can even mark to have them send Blu-rays when they’re available. I think these are great additions to an already spectacular club. I’ve already picked out my movies for next month.
So, to reiterate, My Discount DVD Club sends you two movies on DVD and sometimes Blu-ray from any genre of your choosing. They also send popcorn and candy and the whole thing costs $8.99 including shipping. You can also save money by buying six or 12 month plans. It’s perfect for movie nights with the family, cheap date nights, or gifts for film loving friends. Give them a try today.
