Stories and characters loved by many are the stars of this week’s new releases. Two films based on popular books make their way onto the big screen this weekend. The latest installment in the Alien franchise is making its debut.
Couples aboard a spaceship set out to colonize a planet in Alien: Covenant. As they venture into the uncharted world, they discover that the seemingly isolated territory has deadly secrets. Ridley Scott directed the sci-fi adventure starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollet, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby and James Franco. The two hour and two minute action film is rated R for violence, language, sex and nudity.
The Heffley family hits the road in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. On the way to his grandmother’s 90’s birthday party, Greg has a mastermind plan to get his parents to detour to a video game convention. The PG comedy stars Jason Ian Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott and Alicia Silverstone. The film plays for one hour and thirty-one minutes.
A teenage girl suffers from a debilitating disease in which going outside her sterilized environment can make her deathly ill in Everything, Everything. A new neighbor opens up her heart and her world, making her want to risk sickness to experience life beyond the walls of her home. The one hour and thirty-six minute romantic drama is based on the book of the same name by Nicola Yoon. The film is rated PG-13.
More familiar characters are back on the big screen next week. The latest film in the Pirate of the Caribbean series and the Baywatch movie enter theaters on Memorial Day weekend.
