Tyler Perry is being very specific about who gets his donations towards the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Perry is standing by Joel Osteen and the Lakewood Church, allotting them $250,000 of the $1 million he is donating.
Osteen's church has been under media scrutiny for not immediately opening their doors as a shelter. Initially, they did not have access, then became a supply coordination center and then opened the church to evacuees.
Perry, who is known for his generosity, backs Osteen's statements that they were not called upon to open as a shelter immediately. According to Essence, he said:
“I know that there’s been some controversy about Joel Osteen and him not opening the doors of the church. Joel and Victoria are amazing people — there’s no way that they would lock people out of the church or not let people seek shelter.”
Another $250,000 is slated to go to Beyonce's charity, BeyGOOD, whose donations are being coordinated by pastor Rudy Rasmus.
The Madea creator is still deciding where the rest of his donations are going. He expressed concerns over making sure any charities he gives go are going to the people and not the corporations. He said in a video on Facebook, "Find a charity that will get the money to the people."
