This football great talks about his new show and how his wonderful Notre Dame-loving family helps him manage his diabetes

Mike Golic had a great eight-year run as a defensive lineman in the NFL. However, since his retirement in 1993, he has been keeping busy on television and radio, has been on ESPN's Mike and Mike and now starting his newest show Golic and Wingo which also features his millennial son, Mike, Jr.

Many years ago, when he was 42, he received the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes, just like 30 million other Americans who struggle with this condition.  Instead of being devastated, he turned to science, his family and his faith and came up with a plan to help him manage his condition in a way that is inspiring to others.

Mike Golic hails from Willowick, Ohio and his two brothers went to Notre Dame, where he and brother Bob played football.  Actually, Notre Dame plays a huge part of his life as his wife, Christine and all three of his children Mike Jr., Jake and daughter Sydney attended the same school and were active in college sports for the Fighting Irish.

He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 1985 NFL Draft and throughout his career, he played for the Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins.  Golic was celebrated as being one of football's greatest players he is featured in the PS3 and Xbox 360 game, All-Pro Football 2K8.

When he wrapped up his football career, he went into broadcasting.  After a few years working locally in Philadelphia, he hosted Mike & Mike with Mike Greenberg on ESPN Radio and ESPN2 from 2000 to 2017.  He also hosts s also the host of the long-running syndicated sports humor show called The Lighter Side of Sports.

Mike's diabetes diagnosis didn't come as a shock, but having to make serious lifestyle changes came about because of the support of his family and medical team, as well as his positive attitude.

The lovely and cheerful couple of Mike and  Christine Golic spoke with Michelle Tompkins for TheCelebrityCafe.com about his time playing, their family's loyalty to Notre Dame, what are his thoughts on football now, his suggestions to make football safer, what his new show is about, how he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, what is ICanImagine.com, tackling the condition and keeping active as a family and how others can battle their Type 2 Diabetes as well.
