It’s the time of the year when you take home a furry friend… or furry friends! That’s right! It’s National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day.
National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is observed on April 30 every year. This day is commemorated to create awareness about the need to adopt those thousand pets who are waiting to find a forever home for themselves.
Organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), which has played an important role in creating awareness about animal adoption, have surveyed that shelter adoption rates in the States have been on a steady rise from 2011. This shows that there is increasing awareness about the fact that adoption of animals gives them a second chance in life.
One of the primary motives to promote adoption of pets from shelters is to reduce or stop buying and selling of exotic breeds of animals, dogs especially. So apart from giving shelter pets a second chance to live their life, adoption of pets also saves lives of animals who are systematically bred for commercial purposes right till the time they either are incapable of giving birth to off-springs or till they die.
