Infinity War has been dominating the box office for almost a month but this weekend we finally crowned a new box office champion.
Deadpool 2 won the weekend box office and delivered a solid opening weekend. It didn’t break records like originally predicted but still managed to bring $125 million. It has become the second largest R-rated opening behind the original film’s opening of $132.4 million back in 2016.
This opening weekend is the second largest Fox opening of all-time behind the original Deadpool. The film also had success at the international box office as it brought in $176.3 million over 81 international markets. The film brought in over $300 million worldwide.
Avengers: Infinity War spent its first weekend outside of the top spot. The film finished in second place with $28.7 million and is closing in on $600 million domestically. It is currently the eighth largest domestic release of all-time. The global box office for the film stands at $1.81 billion, making it the fourth largest global release of all-time.
The comedy film Book Club opened in third place with $12.5 million. The film opened in just shy of 2,800 theaters and I’m expecting this film to finish around $40-$50 million domestically.
Life of the Party dropped two spots to fourth place with $7.7 million. The film dropped 57 percent during its second weekend and just passed $30 million domestically.
Breaking In rounds out the top five with $6.5 million and is approaching $30 million domestically. The film took a 63 percent drop during its second weekend and I expect this to be the last week this film remains inside the top five.
The other new wide release of the weekend Show Dogs opened in sixth place. The film only brought in $6 million and this is not good as it now ranks as one of the worst openings for a film that debuted in over 3,000 theaters.
A Quiet Place brought in another $4 million this weekend and is now approaching $180 million domestically. The worldwide gross for the horror film is approaching $300 million. I’ve also heard reports that plans for a sequel are currently in the works.
Overboard ($4.7 million), Rampage ($1.5 million) and I Feel Pretty ($1.2 million) round out the rest of the top ten.
It will be interesting to see if Deadpool 2 can repeat as box office champion as it faces some tough competition from the latest Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story which will be opening in over 4,200 locations.
