Ant-Man only enjoyed one weekend as box office champion as it was dethroned by Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
The latest installment in the Hotel Transylvania series had a solid opening of $44.1 million. This continued the trend of this franchise winning their opening weekend and by bringing in at least $40 million during its debut weekend. This opening weekend is just above the original’s opening of $44.1 but slightly below Hotel Transylvania 2’s opening weekend of $48.5 million back in 2015.
I think this film has the potential to finish anywhere between the $110-$130 million range domestically. A very good opening considering it was going up against the record-breaking Incredibles 2.
Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 62 percent during its second weekend and brought in $29.1 million to cross $130 million domestically. This was the largest second-weekend drop for a sequel within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is one of five films from the MCU that did not repeat at #1 over their second weekend at the box office. The film brought in $35.3 internationally to push its worldwide gross to just shy of $300 million.
Skyscraper opened in third place with a slightly disappointing opening of $25.5 million. This is his lowest opening since 2017’s Baywatch, which only brought in $18.5 during its opening weekend. It looks pretty likely to me this film will finish around the $70 million range domestically. The film did bring in $40.4 million internationally for a global opening weekend of just under $66 million.
Incredibles 2 still remains in the top five dropping one spot to fourth place. The film brought in $16.2 million, pushing its domestic total to over $530 million. It did pass The Dark Knight to become the ninth highest grossing domestic release of all-time. It is also the 64th largest worldwide release of all-time.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rounds out the top five with $15.5 million. The film passed $360 million domestically and is also sitting around $1.134 billion worldwide. This makes this film the 18th largest worldwide release of all-time.
The First Purge dropped 47 percent and brought in $9.1 million and is sitting just under $50 million domestically. Sorry to Bother You climbed an impressive nine spots to seventh place and brought in $4.3 million.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado ($3.9 million), Uncle Drew ($3.2 million) and Ocean’s 8 ($2.9 million) round out the rest of the top ten.
It will be interesting to see if Hotel Transylvania 3 can remain box office champion as it will face some competition from three new wide releases including Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer 2.
