Even though Cult of Chucky was just last year and there's still a Chucky TV show coming out?
Chucky is back. I mean, technically he never really went away — they’ve been making Child's Play movies ever since the first one came out in 1988, they’ve mostly all just been straight-to-DVD and no one has been paying attention to them.
Now, however, MGM wants to bring the murderous serial killer doll back into the limelight, as they’ve recently just announced they’ll be rebooting the property.
Lars Klevberg, creator of the still unreleased Polaroid (which isn’t a good sign, as I’m pretty sure it was originally supposed to come out in 2015), will be directing. It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith will produce, with Tyler Burton Smith writing the script.
Collider is reporting that the plot, while still unconfirmed by MGM, will revolve around a Stranger Things-like group of kids who stumble upon a technologically-advanced doll — Chucky.
That’s right, Chucky’s getting some upgrades this time around, and I don’t know how to feel about that. Like, why can’t he still just be a regular old doll?
Either way, it seems like that’s the direction they’re taking Child’s Play in, so I guess the new generation’s Chucky is going to be all mechanical and whatnot. The more I write on this, the more ridiculous it sounds.
What’s really strange, though, is that there seems to be other Child’s Play properties that are still in active development, which are all independent of these reboots. There have been seven Child’s Play movies, with Cult of Chucky being released just last year.
That’s not that long ago. Something else happened even more recently too — just last week, Child’s Play creator Don Mancini announced that a Chucky TV series is on its way. From what I’ve gathered, this show will be a direct follow-up to Cult of Chucky while this new Child’s Play is going to be its own thing altogether.
That’s a whole lot of information to process and, quite honestly, I don’t know if Chucky has a large enough fanbase to warrant all this content. There are Child’s Play fans out there, sure, but it’s definitely not one of the hottest horror franchises of all time.
And, quite frankly, while I’ve never been a huge Child’s Play fan. I’m way more interested in the Chucky TV show (which, if they do it right, could be the next Ash vs. Evil Dead) than I am with a straight up reboot.
What do you guys think? Would you tune in for a Child’s Play reboot? Do you like the idea of bringing Chucky into the modern age, or would you rather see the TV show instead? Let us know in the comments below!
