Remember last week how I said all the movies at the box office were really dark? Well, Marvel must have noticed that too, because they just released one of the most fun movies of the summer — Ant-Man and the Wasp.

There are also a couple of new trailers that came out this week that have everyone pretty excited, so let’s jump right into it.

Opening this week:

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Avengers: Infinity War ended on a pretty dramatic note that gave us all slight anxiety. Marvel knew that was coming, so it makes why Ant-Man and the Wasp would be their next film. It’s perfect counter-programming as Ant-Man is light and fun, taking the style of a Saturday morning cartoon (in a good way) instead of anything all dark and ominous. There’s one joke in there that absolutely killed me. Check out my review here.

The First Purge

Well, it’s good for all the fans of The Purge out there I guess…are there even any fans of The Purge left at this point? At this point, it seems like this franchise has kind of came and went. The First Purge is more of the same — there are a few creepy images, but it all gets so heavy-handed and unsubtle with the political messages that it’s trying to address that I can’t really recommend this one.

Sorry to Bother You

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record at this point when I say that there is a movie I’m really excited to see being released, but I’m going to have to wait an additional month to see it before it gets picked up by a theater in my area. Someone needs to buy me a house in Los Angeles, ASAP.

Whitney

Whitney, however, is playing in a theater near me and since I’ve already seen Ant-Man and the Wasp and The First Purge, I think I might check this one out later this week.

New Trailers:

Summer of ’84 (August 10, 2018)

Stranger Things. Again. I get that it’s a super popular television show and everyone wants to jump on that bandwagon, but I still feel like filmmakers can do better than this. Try to make it look like you’ve got some of you’ve got some original ideas, at least. I don’t know, I’ve heard some good things of Summer of ’84 coming out of Sundance, but it’s going to take a lot for this one to win me over.

Cold Skin (Sept. 7, 2018)

This one, on the other hand, got me. No one is going to see this movie, which is sad, but I had a pretty stupid grin on my face for the whole trailer. Yeah, maybe it looks a little over-acted, but I love the setting and creature design — I’m ready for a creepy night with Cold Skin.

Juliet, Naked (August 17, 2018)

Didn’t expect much based off the title, but was actually pleasantly surprised during the trailer. It’s got a great cast and looks like a warm, funny romantic comedy that I’m now excited to see. I don’t think we’re going to be reinventing the wheel with Juliet, Naked but it has my attention.

Father of the Year (July 20, 2018)

Father of the Year does not have my attention. This one can just hurry up and leave from the public consciousness because nothing about this looks appealing. I don’t even feel like talking about it anymore, it looks so dumb. Just don’t see this movie, please.

Rewind:

The Raid: Redemption (2011)

The Purge is a movie about people trapped in a certain spot, with the only escape being murder. The Raid: Redemption is, more or less, the same thing — only The Raid: Redemption does it a thousand times better. This has some of the best fight choreography that you’ll ever see put to screen, as this is a non-stop thrill ride from the get-go. Don’t even get me started on The Raid 2 either, because that one is just as good.
