The best word to describe the band, Fried Goat’s, sound is organic. Their debut release, Bon Appetit, reminded me of a time when musicians actually played their instruments and singers didn’t rely on autotune.
The band, who hails from Augusta, Georgia, has been classified by critics as either Americana or Blues Rock, but their bio insists that they refused to be categorized by any genre. Bon furthers their stance by featuring different musical styles such as folk on “Another Day,” rock with “Don’t Let It Bring You Down,” and alternative rock with “Henry.”
They’re all over the musical map, but Bon’s production never comes off as distorted or sloppy. Each track also shows their talents as musicians and singers. They unexpectedly show that they’re willing to take musical risks with the track, “Bulgarian Rhapsody,” which is unlike anything you’ve heard so far this year.
Their only misstep is on “The Battle of Gina-Lina,” which features an instrumental bridge that goes on much too long. I’ve often found that these parts sound better live rather then on record where they become tedious after only a couple of minutes.
Fried Goat manages to serve up some tasty harmonies and southern fried grooves with Bon Appetit. You’ll get a full course of music that fully satisfies the pallet of music lovers who wish that today’s musical landscape would get back to its roots more often.
