At least 14 people were killed after a boat of migrants sank off the coast of Italy.
ANSA, the country’s state-run news agency reported that the Italian Navy has said that 14 bodies had been recovered so far and the death toll could rise.
The coastguard was able to rescue about 200 people from the overcrowded boat of nearly 400.
CNN noted that this news comes one day after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Tripoli, Libya and killed about 40 people. Italy’s Navy said that their military has rescued thousands of migrants just in the last five days.
The illegal migrants were headed to the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa when the boat sank.
Italian officials have organized the rescue mission as Libya does not have the resources to assist in the search that happened in the Mediterranean Sea about 100 miles south of the island.
The European Union border agency said that last year about 43,000 migrants arrived in Italy by boat.
