Musical best buds Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett appeared on NBC’s Today Show this morning to finally announce that jazz album they’ve been talking about forever will finally be released this fall.
In a joint interview with Savannah Guthrie at the top of Rockefeller Center, the unlikely collaborators announced that the newly titled Cheek to Cheek will be out on Sept. 23.
“The collaboration has just been so wonderful,” Gaga told Guthrie. “It's so natural singing with Tony.”
Bennett, who has been performing since before Gaga was even born, admitted, “I love the way she sings.” Throughout the rest of the interview, the two continued sharing compliments on each other's work and talked about using the Great American Songbook as the source for the album.
The album has been in the making for well over a year. The two first recorded together on Bennett’s Duets II, sharing the mic for “The Lady is a Tramp.” After the two sang the song together at a presidential inauguration ball in January 2013, Gaga teased that she would make a full album with him.
Then, in March 2013, Bennett said that he “can’t wait” to make the album. Now, that dream has come true.
This will be Gaga’s first album since ARTPOP, which came out last fall. You can get the first Cheek To Cheek single, a cover of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes,” on iTunes starting today.
As Rolling Stone points out, the two also recorded a concert at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center, which will air on PBS this fall.
