Even Mark Ruffalo doesn’t know where The Hulk goes after Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he’s sure it won’t be in a Hulk solo movie any time soon. In a new interview, Ruffalo said that Universal still has the distribution rights to Hulk solo movies.

While speaking with Collider today, Ruffalo said that his contract with Marvel includes for more movies. The deal allows him to pop up in other films and Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and Part II. He did mention a Hulk standalone, but that would be hard to do.

“As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue,” Ruffalo revealed. “That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me.”

Universal did produce the 2003 Hulk movie, then distributed 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which was a Marvel production. That last fact might make Universal a little more open to allowing Marvel to make another Hulk movie, this time with Ruffalo. Universal would still have distribution rights to the film, so Disney would have to work out some deal on that front.

Marvel has talked about the possibilities of a new Hulk movie, but have made it clear that there are no plans for one. Considering how poorly received the other Hulk movies were, one can understand why the studio would be apprehensive about the idea. They would also have to squeeze it into the packed Phase Three line-up somewhere.

The Hulk does get a big fight scene with Iron Man in Age of Ultron, which opens on May 1.
