The streak finally came to an end as Black Panther was finally dethroned at the box office.
Pacific Rim: Uprising won the weekend box office with a $28 million opening weekend. This is a decent opening but it did fall short of the $37.3 million opening of the original film back in 2013.
The original Pacific Rim grossed just over $100 million domestically and it seems that this film will probably have a gross just under $100 million. The film is doing very well internationally as it brought in almost $123 million this weekend. I think the film will have a solid box office gross.
Black Panther dropped to second place after spending over a month as box office champion. It brought in $16.7 million and has now reached $630 million domestically. It has become the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time. It has also become the fifth largest domestic release of all-time.
I Can Only Imagine remained in third place with $13.8 million and is now approaching $40 million domestically. The film only saw a 19 percent drop as it expanded into more theaters and hopes to have continued success.
Sherlock Gnomes opened in fourth place with $10.6 million. This was quite the disappointing opening and was way behind the $25.4 million opening of Gnomeo and Juliet back in 2011. I don’t see this film remaining in the top five after this weekend.
Tomb Raider dropped three spots and rounds out the top five with $10.4 million. The film dropped 56% during its second weekend and just crossed $40 million domestically. The film is also performing well internationally as the worldwide gross for the film stands at over $210 million.
The other three new wide releases finished in eighth, tenth and eleventh place respectfully. Paul, Apostle of Christ finished in eighth place with $5 million. Another faith-based film that will hope to have some success next weekend over the Easter holiday. Midnight Sun opened in tenth place with $4.1 million and the new thriller Unsane finished in eleventh place with $2.8 million.
I don’t think Pacific Rim: Uprising will hold the top spot next weekend as we have three new wide releases opening including Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated film Ready Player One.
