Captain Marvel, the next installation in the Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe, has officially started production.

The announcement was accompanied by a photo of Brie Larson in a flight outfit posing with a fighter jet.

Larson, who won an Oscar for her role in Room, plays the role of Carol Danvers, an Air Force Officer who becomes the superhero, Captain Marvel. She met with Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt on a visit to research her character at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

Along with the announcement of the beginning of production, Marvel also confirmed that two key players in the Marvel Universe will be returning in the film. Clark Gregg who played Agent Coulson and Djimon Hounsou, who played Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy, will reprise their roles in Captain Marvel. Also returning is Samuel L. Jackson as a pre-founder of Shield Nick Fury and Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser.

Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, before the events of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger. So there is room for cameos from some of our other favorites heroes as well.

Recently, Samuel L. Jackson posted a photo on his Instagram of a head prosthetic he is apparently using for the film.

Who knows what exactly this is for, but you can be sure Marvel will keep it under wraps.

Captain Marvel is set for a March 2019 release and also stars Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, and Kenneth Mitchell. It also features the first female director for a Marvel movie, as Anna Boden takes on directorial duties alongside Ryan Fleck.

Filming began in Los Angeles today. Additional filming will take place in Fresno and Louisiana.
