Well, that was the most exciting ten second of my day.
Rule number one: Never believe any news stories that break on the first of April. David F. Sandberg clearly got this memo, which is why he decided to trick everyone by releasing a fake trailer for the upcoming Shazam!
The Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director posted a minute long video on his Twitter account, leading fans to believe they were about to see the first official footage from DC’s Shazam! It even had the official Warner Brothers logos and everything at the very beginning.
Ten seconds in and it very clearly becomes evident that what we’re seeing is now Zachary Levi as a superhero. No, instead we’re just looking at a bunch of retro footage from the 1970’s Shazam! television show, done to the tune of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.”
And, to top it all off, the title card comes in at the very end revealing the new “official” title: Shazam: Revenge of the Ponysmasher.
It’s a funny joke and all, but the inner fanboy me died a little bit inside when I realized it was a gag and not actual footage from the film. I know, I know, but can you really blame me for getting excited?
On the other hand, at least this means that Shazam! is at least moving forward quickly enough to be promoted. With DC you never really know, seeing how they have, like, twenty different projects that are currently in development. They’ve already announced that Shazam! was being fast-tracked, but the fact that Sandberg is publicly advocating for his film seems to be a good sign.
Also, I had no idea that Shazam! used to be a television show, so I guess I have some homework to do before the movie is released.
Now we just have to wait until the REAL Shazam! footage is released, whenever that might be. The movie itself is due to arrive in theaters on April 5, 2019.
