Good news: There’s a Pet Sematary remake in the works over at Paramount. More good news: Jason Clarke is in final negotiations to star in the lead role.
Pet Sematary is a novel that was written and published by Stephen King in 1983. In 1989, Mary Lambert directed a direct adaptation of the film, with a script written by King. The film, while by no means is a classic, went on to become something of a cult-hit amongst King fans and horror fanatics.
Now, the time has come for a reboot. Clarke would play the role of Louis Creed — a doctor who moves his family out into the county and buries his deceased toddler son in a pet cemetery that rests on an ancient burial ground. The boy is resurrected and possessed, as he then goes to reek havoc on the entire town. Dale Midkiff played Clarke’s part in the 1989 version.
The new Pet Sematary will be directed by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch. The two previously worked together on 2014’s Starry Eyes.
Jason Clarke seems like a good natural fit into the role. I have yet to see Clarke give any Oscar deserving performances, but he’s a more than capable actor who can play a good straight man, which can be seen in such things like Everest and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
He’s also receiving lots of buzz for his latest role as Ten Kennedy in Chappaquiddick, which is in theaters now.
It’s the news that the Pet Sematary remake is actually getting made that really excites me. The first Pet Sematary is fine and all but, like It, this is a property that could really benefit with a reboot and modern technology.
