This is such good news.
Hot off the heels of Ready Player One, acclaimed director Steven Spielberg is gearing up to tackle another big project in the coming years: DC’s Blackhawk.
Based on a 1941 comic of the same name, Blackhawk (not to be confused with Ridley Scott’s Blackhawk Down) follows a small group of World War II pilots that come from different nationalities yet all operate under the same code name: Blackhawk.
Operating off of a hidden base known as Blackhawk Island, the squadron protects the skies from the Axis, while also battling some of their greatest foes — such as King Condor and Killer Shark.
Yes, sounds somewhat goofy, but it’s a 1941 comic book. The pitch for an old Batman comic-book also would sound ridiculous, but look at what Christopher Nolan did with that.
At the very least, Spielberg will be producing Blackhawk, but Entertainment Weekly is reporting that he’s very interested in directing as well. Given all the headlines that the story has been getting, it’s pretty safe to assume that’s going to end up happening at some point.
This is all after he finishes Indiana Jones 5 and his West Side Story reboot of course, meaning Blackhawk still might be a few years down the line. But there’s still a reason to get excited here — this is the first time that Spielberg had taken a comic-book property head on. He directed The Adventures of Tintin back in 2011 (a movie I’ll still stand up and support against all the nay-sayers, as it’s basically an animated Indiana Jones movie that’s a ton of fun), but this will be the first time really working in the superhero genre.
“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen,” Spielberg said in a statement. “The bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”
The script for Blackhawk is being written by David Koepp, who also worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World (STILL NOT A BAD MOVIE) and War of the Worlds.
The question that I and other DC fans then have is: how much will this fit into the DC cinematic universe? They’ve announced that they’re planning to take their universe in several different directions after the failure of Justice League, but does that mean there will no longer be any connectivity between any of their movies? Or, given the time period in which Blackhawk will take place, is it possible that Wonder Woman will show up?
We’ll have to wait an indefinite amount of time to see, as there’s no release date for Blackhawk currently announced.
Does the idea of Steven Spielberg directing this property excite you as much as it excites me? Would you want to see Wonder Woman or other DC characters show up in Blackhawk, or would you rather this be its own thing entirely? Let us know in the comments below!
