John Oliver returned to HBO with Last Week Tonight after a two-week hiatus. In that time, Oliver managed to sell over 180,000 copies of his show's parody book, A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, in just the first two days.
This week, John Oliver took a step back from children's book publishing, but instead took to Day-time television with a new courtroom show, Tot Bench.
With only enough time for a quick recap of the week, Oliver looked into the recent Egyptian election. The current Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, was the only real candidate running, Oliver had fun making fun of the obviously fraudulent election the country was having.
In a season four episode, Last Week Tonight explored Sinclair broadcasting and the control they have over local news. This week, Oliver talked about a truncated version of the story, satirizing the scripts they force their local partners to read about fake news. The best moment was a clip of Boris Epstein featuring an epic camera zoom that they inevitably recreated at the end of the segment.
The top story and the highlight of the show this week was the in-depth look at Immigration Courts. A little talked about topic in the news, this subject is of immense importance in the lives of undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, the system is flawed, to say the least, as one former judge puts it, "in essence, we are doing death penalty cases in a traffic court setting."
Oliver spent the rest of the episode pouring over the disparities between judges, the power of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and the ridiculousness of the fact that children as young as three years old have to represent themselves in court if they cannot afford a lawyer.
To hammer home his point, Oliver showcased a clip of Tot Bench, the new daytime court drama, led by a 3-year-old judge, lawyer and plaintiff. The defendant in question was H. Jon Benjamin, voice actor of Archer. The clip is hilarious and one of the best pre-recorded videos the show has ever done.
