Can one of them please be Rise of the Guardians 2?
With a handful of Oscars under his belt after The Shape of Water (which more or less means he has the freedom to chose whatever he pleases for his next project), Guillermo del Toro has signed an exclusive multi-year deal with DreamWorks Animation to work on a handful of animated family films.
Del Toro will write, produce and/or direct an unnamed number of films for the studio.
This renews his long collaborations of the past with DreamWorks Animation, as del Toro served as an executive producer on Kung Fu Panda 3, Puss in Boots and Rise of the Guardians. He was also a creative consultant for Megamind.
Additionally, del Toro is also the creator of the DreamWorks and Netflix Original Trollhunters — a show I’ve heard is great but haven’t yet gotten around to watching.
“Animation is an art form that has influenced my work greatly since childhood,” said del Toro in a statement via Variety. “To me, it’s the perfect medium to bring to life any and all ideas, no matter how outlandish or wild.
I am eager to work with Chris and the talented artists at DreamWorks — some of the most talented people in the business — to make these images a reality. I have worked with DreamWorks for about a decade and the horizon just keeps getting wider.”
“We are thrilled the Guillermo is adding a film partnership to the already successful television relationship he has with DreamWorks Animation,” DreamWorks Animation President Chris deFaria said. “He is truly a one-of-a-kind artist, and we are eager to see his imagination on full display in the family animated feature space.”
Earlier this month, the director also signed a deal with Fox Searchlight to write, produce and direct several live-action feature films. So, basically, he’s keeping pretty busy these days.
Which is great, because who doesn’t love Guillermo del Toro? The Shape of Water wasn’t my favorite thing that he’s ever done, but seeing him further dabble in the world of animation could be a lot of fun. Maybe we could see him do something with stop-motion, or actually tackle Rise of the Guardians 2 (because that movie is great and it’s sad that no one remembers it)?
